"Context, Content and Process", Frances Vaughan

What is your understanding, at first reading, of these terms?  What do you see as the meaning and role of "consciousness" in the Transpersonal Approach?

  1. At first reading, I understand context, content, and process to be the following: Context - the thoughts, beliefs, values, and intentions of the therapist. Content - the experiences of transcendence (of the ego) that the client has. The spectrum can include anything from the problems of coping with life (not necessarily transpersonal) to trying find meaning or purpose in life. Process - movement through the stages of identification, dis-identification, self-transcendence, transpersonal awareness, insight and attachment, the expanded sense of self, etc.

I understand the meaning and role of consciousness in the transpersonal approach to be like that of awareness. It it the object and the instrument of change used by the client in therapy. Like the fisherman who teaches a hungry person how to fish, the therapist teaches the client, through consciousness, to create situations where problems can be solved. In this way, consciousness allows the client to handle problems as they arise.
